Men Take Sixth; End Of The Road

Well we have come to the end of the FINA World Championships, for water polo anyway. The men lost a tough one today to Spain by a single goal to end up in sixth place. A surprise that both teams would take sixth after they each came in ranked fourth and first respectively. That said there is now some definite motivation moving forward. In the game against Spain the men got down 4-0 early and it was a tough hole to climb out of. They got back within a goal several times but couldn't get all the way back.

With the water polo match done early in the day we were able to check out some swimming, pretty cool venue here in Shanghai. Micahel Phelps took gold in the 100 fly and Missy Franklin (a name on the rise to be sure) won the 200 back. They have an awesome entrance for the swimmers, very pro wrestling style. Two walls with videos playing on them slide apart and the swimmers come out of the opening with their name and country displayed on the video wall. It adds to the whole light show they have going on.

That is going to about wrap things up for this edition of "Greetings from Beijing." For the diehards that join us in non-Olympic years, thanks for reading. Back in October at the Pan American Games. I can only hope posting is easier there and this blog will be way better looking with photos, longer posts etc.

Don't forget Junior Olympics live webcasts at waterpolo.teamusa.org/live this coming Tuesday, August 2 and Sunday, August 7. Also a Junior Olympic highlight show airing on August 23 on Universal Sports. Don't miss it.
