They Say Spain Is Pretty, Though I've Never Been...

Hello from Barcelona, Spain, site of the 2013 FINA World Championships. After a lengthy travel day that included a near 11-hour flight from Los Angeles to Frankfurt and then a connection to Barcelona I arrived in Spain yesterday. Quick shoutout to the folks at Lufthansa for giving me a free upgrade to business class just out of the goodness of their heart. That was a gamechanger of the highest order.

As for Barcelona and as the title of the post would suggest, courtesy of Elton John, I had never been to Spain before this trip. So far so good. The first full day was mostly getting acclimated to the hotel and the venue as both team's practiced today. The hotel is nice and everyone has been pretty friendly. We were warned repeatedly about pickpockets in this city so while everyone is nice I'm also on the lookout for potential thieves.

Here is a view from up top at the water polo venue
From our hotel window you can see Camp Nou, the home stadium for FC Barcelona
The pool itself is very nice. Held on the same site as the 1992 Olympic Games, the pool is on a hill overlooking the city and from up high in the bleachers you can get some great views in most every direction. I have an enclosed a few photos of the venue so you can get an idea of what we are working with.

The games start on Sunday with women's competition first so we have just one more day of trainings before things begin for real. Last night was a chance to check out the city and have an authentic tapas dinner. We went at around 7pm which is very early, by the time we were leaving at 930 or so the place was really starting to heat up for the true dinner hour. Tapas is kind of like a buffet where they bring everything to you. You can try out a variety of stuff as it all comes on small plates. One of the highlights was a type of omelet. Not your standard dinner fare, but still pretty good.

Well that is all for now...more to come tomorrow.
